John H. Muetterties
was born in Elgin, Illinois. His college studies were interrupted and
he served
for 3 years during World War II in the United States Navy, seeing
action
in the Pacific and obtaining the rank of Lieutenant.
He graduated from the University of
Wisconsin in 1948 with a major in statistics and was employed as a
casualty actuary by the Insurance Department for the State of
Wisconsin, being responsible for the supervision of casualty filings
and examinations.
During the period 1955 to 1959, Mr.
Muetterties was employed by the Industrial Indemnity Company, San
Francisco, California, as Casualty Actuary and head of the Actuarial
Department. In 1959, he joined the Sentry Insurance Company, Stevens
Point, Wisconsin, as Actuary and officer in charge of the Property and
Casualty Actuarial Department. He served on the Actuarial Committees of
the CRIB, PCAA, NCCI, Mutual Bureau and the Alliance.
Mr. Muetterties came to New York City
in 1970 to head the Actuarial-Statistical Department of the Insurance
Rating Board. In 1971, at the time of its merger into Insurance
Services Office, he was named Actuary, continuing his responsibility as
an officer and as head of the Actuarial-Statistical Department of the
newly formed, all lines, property-casualty organization. Later he
became
Vice President for Government and Industry Relations of ISO.
In 1978, Mr. Muetterties became a
consultant in the casualty-property actuarial area. During Mr.
Muetterties’ diversified experiences as an actuary with an insurance
department, a stock company, a mutual company and a multiple lines
rating bureau before becoming a consultant, he has testified at many
hearings and court cases. Also, he has supervised the training of a
number of successful actuaries.
Mr. Muetterties became a Fellow of
the Casualty Actuarial Society by examination in 1956, was a member of
the Professional Conduct Committee, was an advisor to the Examination
Committee of the Society, served on the Education Committee for many
years and was on the Board of Directors from 1972 through 1974. He is
also a charter member of the American Academy
of Actuaries and served on its Professional Conduct Committee. He is a
member of the International Congress of Actuaries, ASTIN Section and a
Fellow and former member of the Board and a past President of the
Conference
of Consulting Actuaries. He was President of the Mid-western Actuarial
Forum during 1970.
Mr. Muetterties resides in Mountain
Lakes, New Jersey.
