Lawrence Williams graduated from
Hampton University in 1971 with a BA degree and from the University of
Houston in 1978 with a Masters in Business Administration Finance. He
became an Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a Member of
the American Academy in 1983.
Mr. Williams began his actuarial
career in 1979 at Aetna Life and Casualty, where he performed a variety
of assignments. At Aetna, he worked in a personal lines pricing unit,
performed commercial package policy ratemaking as well as ratemaking
for general liability. He performed workers’ compensation pricing with
retro and dividend plans and rate of return analysis. He also performed
reserving for professional liability, general liability, and commercial
auto liability.
In 1984, Mr. Williams joined
Tillinghast as a consulting actuary. His work at Tillinghast included
reserve reviews for liquidations of insurers, and mergers and
acquisitions. His clients included insurers, reinsurers, financial
guarantors, captives, and self-insureds.
In 1989, Mr. Williams joined the New
Jersey Insurance Department. There, he helped draft rate and solvency
regulations toward the implementation of the private passenger
automobile insurance reform act. He regularly participated in financial
examination of insurers domiciled in New Jersey and dealt with
liquidations and rehabilitations of insurers and capital requirements
for insurer formations. He also provided expert witness testimony in
private passenger rate hearings.
In 1993, Mr. Williams joined Johnson
& Higgins, which later merged with Marsh & McClennan. At the
brokerage firm, he advised brokers and risk managers on the price and
program structure of casualty coverage for large/national commercial
accounts. In this capacity, Mr. Williams priced and negotiated letter
of credits, loss portfolios, large deductible programs and
retrospectively-rated programs. He worked on the placement of
malpractice insurance for hospitals and other health-care provider and
assisted clients with captive formations.
He joined MBA Actuaries, Inc in 2006.
His areas of special interest include malpractice, litigation support,
regulation, self-insurance and captives.
